Men who answer, ‘I am married’, to a question like, ‘Are you happy?’ should rehearse their answer to something new, and also which is likeable to their spouse. A new study, says that getting married is good for the well-being of both men and women, cutting down risks of depression and anxiety.

HT City spoke with a few married couples who thought otherwise and were happily surprised to know about the study, and there were others who agreed, totally.

Real life episode
Santosh Gupta, a professional, says, “I truly back the study, as I feel that after marriage one finds a stable companionship. One feels secure and through ups and downs of life (psychologically) one has this notion that there’s someone with him/her all the time.”

Some actually experience the marital bliss while others fail to understand the connection between bliss and marriage. Newly married photographer Sanjeev Kumar, says, “Well! I’m not able to get — how does marriage lessen the risk of depression and anxiety. I would say, it rather aggravates it. My life changed completely after marriage, and I must say, most of them (the changes) are not the welcome changes.” He adds, “I am not only financially strained but I have to give answers for whatever I do. And the only lucky offs (leave) that I get, pass in attending to social obligations.”

Well! The plight of Sanjeev may be unending but psychiatrist Sameer Parikh, says that it (being stressed after marriage) may be the case with couples where understanding among the them is missing its mark.

How to go about it
Smita Sharma, 26, a banker, who is planning to get married coming January, says, “There’s still time for me to get married but I think the prospect of getting married is already working positively for me. I truly identify with this new study (marrige cuts down risks of anxiety) and hope that I continue to do so.”

Dr Parikh, says, “Marriage is a milestone in one’s life. It does involve emotional turmoil, and requires compassion and consideration for each other to keep the relationship smooth. Bottomline: Marriage is a great stress-buster.”
