Scotching rumours of joining the BJP, former union minister Harmohan Dhawan is now constesting as the the Indian National Lok Dal candidate.

Former Union minister Harmohan Dhawan is the Indian National Lok Dal candidate. Dhawan had supported the Congress in the 1999 parliamentary elections. He had parted ways with the party some time back. There were rumours of his joining the BJP, but Dhawan denied those.

Born in 1940 in Fatehjung (Pakistan), Dhawan migrated to Ambala after Partition. He shifted to Chandigarh in 1960. Dhawan did his M Sc (honours) in Botany from Panjab University. He started a small-scale industry in 1970 and became the president of the Industries Association in 1978. He joined the active politics in 1979 and became the president of the local unit of Janata Party in 1981. Dhawan was elected to Parliament in 1989 and became the Union Minister for Civil Aviation.

Pawan Kumar Bansal is the Congress candidates for the Chandigarh parliamentary seat.

The contest in the city will be triangular. Dhawan's main opponents are Pawan Kumar Bansal (Congress) and Satya pal Jain (BJP).
