The Secretary General of the National Council of Hindu Temples (UK), Bimla Krishna Das, has thanked the Hindustan Times for publishing the posters at a Disco Bar in Athens of Durga endorsing whisky.

He said it all resulted in a direct communication from the Greek Embassy in New Delhi to the authorities in Athens to have the posters removed immediately otherwise it conveyed there could be a strong reaction from Hindus worldwide.

The authorities in Athens moved instantly and saw to it that the offending posters were removed. Indians in Athens also went to the Disco Bar and found that the posters were no longer there.

Mr Das said, "We welcome the move from the Disco Bar owners, in Athens. To have the offending poster removed, after being pressurised by the Greek government, but it is unfortunate that they did not listen to the requests made earlier by Hindus and Sikhs.

"We also appreciate the quick steps taken by the Greek government to have the offending poster removed. But we were disappointed by the Indian Embassy in Athens as it did not take any steps even though being told about this matter three months ago. We request the Indian Embassies to be much more forthcoming in providing assistance to the Indian communities settled outside India.

"We are also disappointed that Southern Comfort has not yet issued an apology."
