Murugan was being taken to a police station after his arrest on Tuesday night. On the way, he was allowed to attend the nature's call, police said.

He tried to escape after firing at the police team, injuring the Sub Inspector.

Police then retaliated and shot him dead, the police said.

The SI, Pugazendhi, who received bullet injuries in his right arm, has been hospitalised.

Murugan, hailing from Kizhakandanur village in Theni district, has been facing 17 cases, most of them for murder, the police added.
