Apparently depressed over being HIV positive, a man strangled his wife, poisoned three children and then killed himself early on Wednesday, police said.

Babu Tevar, 39, had allegedly been depressed for some time over the fact that he was HIV positive, his brother has told the police, officials said.

In the wee hours, Tevar, who works in the distribution of films, strangled his 33-year-old wife Amuri at their residence in suburban Mulund.

He then proceeded to feed poison to their three children Venkateshan (10), Mani (8) and Mahalakshmi (5). Following this Tevar consumed poison himself, police said.

All the bodies were found by Tevar's brother Arumugam. A case of suicide has been registered, they said.
