HOCKEY LEGEND Shahid Noor passed away in the City today after a prolonged disease. He was on dialysis for the last one year. He left behind six sons and two daughters. He was 58.

Grief descended on the hockey fraternity of the capital as the news of the legend’s demise spread. “It is a big loss to the Bhopal hockey. He was one of the best international hockey players of his time from Bhopal”, said former Olympian Jalaluddin.

Noor, one of the finest gentlemen ever to play the game, participated in the first hockey World Cup in 1971 in Barcelona. He was known for an amazing control over the ball and his body. It is said that such was his control over his body that he managed to stop himself at any time while running on the field with the ball.

Left-out Noor played for Indian Airlines and other clubs during his career. Last year, the State Government announced a monthly honorarium of Rs 2000 to him in recognition to his services to the game.
