Party leaders and their supporters have left no stone unturned to ensure the victory of their respective candidate.
No political party or group has a clear majority in the 60-member board, and independent panchayat members have to play a crucial role. Therefore, it is becoming difficult to keep their supporters intact for the contenders of the zila panchayat chairperson’s post.
Sources said horse-trading had started and SP leaders had claimed the support of 40 members of the zila panchayat.
Meanwhile, district magistrate and returning officer Dr Hariom said preparations were complete for a free and fair election.
The newly elected zila panchayat members will be allowed entry after intensive checking. Voting will start at 10 am in the Collectorate Conference Hall, and continue till 3 pm. Counting of votes will start just half-an-hour after voting ends.
Dr Hariom said only voters and candidates would be allowed entry inside the district collectorate. Candidates would have to monitor their voters, he said.
He claimed that identity cards were issued to all the newly elected zila panchayat candidates. Mobile phones and others items would also not be allowed on the collectorate premises, he added.
Senior superintendent of police BB Bakshi said nobody with arms would be allowed outside the district collectorate. He said an adequate police force would be deployed there to check any untoward incident.
Meanwhile, 12 zila panchayat members have asked for assistance to cast their vote, including Yashoda Devi.
Interestingly, those who applied for assistance had shown themselves as ‘literate’ in their nomination papers.
Zila panchayat members— Kanti Prabha (ward number 3), Indrawati (ward number 11), Prama (ward number 18), Ram Lal (ward number 31), Subhawati (ward number 34), Malti Devi (ward number 58) and Sumari (ward number 56)—-have asked for assistance.
