A 23-year-old man and his father were arrested by the Kapurbavdi police on Monday for abetting the suicide of his wife and dowry harassment. Call-centre executive Sandeep Singh and schoolteacher Virendrapratap Singh (57), both residents of Nalpada, had been absconding since Vinita’s suicide (23) on February 21.

“Vinita, a D.Ed student, committed suicide by jumping before a running train. In her suicide note, she said her husband and in-laws had been harassing her by demanding Rs 1 lakh. Unable to bear it, she killed herself,” said Assistant Police Inspector MG Kale.

Sandeep and Vinita got married on February 26, 2008 and Vinita’s parents had given a dowry of nearly Rs 3 lakh. However, Sandeep and his parents kept demanding more.

“Vinita had told her parents several times regarding the demand for money. But they were at a loss on how to help her. Her father Diwakar Singh (48) filed a complaint on February 25, following her death in which named Sandeep, his father, mother Vimla (48) and his sister Pratima (28). Father-son duo was hiding at a relative’s place in Thane while his mother and daughter were in Badlapur. We have sent a team to arrest them,” said Kale.

The accused will be produced in court on Tuesday.
