Saying he was eating eggs after five months, Afghan President Hamid Karzai said on Tuesday that he would go back to consuming them in Kabul after seeing people here eat eggs despite the bird flu scare.

Karzai's remarks came in the course of a breakfast meeting with editors on the second day of a three-day visit to India.

"They (his aides) don't give me eggs, they don't give me chicken," Karzai complained loudly over breakfast at the Taj Palace Hotel.

"We've stopped eating eggs in Afghanistan (because of the bird flu scare).

Afghanistan, like other countries in the region, has been hit by bird flu though there had been no reported cases of human deaths.

Karzai then asked Indian ambassador Rakesh Sood, who was present at the breakfast, whether he ate eggs in Kabul. Sood replied that he did - sometimes.

"I shall go back and start eating eggs again, citing the example of India," the president said triumphantly.
