The searches started on Thursday morning at his Dadar residence and office at Bank Street in Churchgate. The Jogeshwari residence of his firm’s CEO, Eruch Chinwala, was also searched. The operation went on till late night and officials said it could go on till Friday morning.

When contacted, Contractor said he was busy and would speak on Friday.

I-T officials did not provide details about the seizures made or the mode of tax evasion, but said they are investigating some cash transactions between Contractor and his clients.

The officials said he had declared substantial income in his tax returns. “But we had got specific information on some concealment following which we conducted the search operation,” said a senior I-T official.

I-T officials also conducted searches on four premises of Navi Mumbai-based property broker Madan Kolambekar on Thursday.

Officials are investigating if he declared the brokerage received on some agricultural plots bought by him, as well as about the veracity of the deals made.
