A technically sound batsman with a mild temperament, Daniel starred for the Under-19 team, leading Sri Lanka's batting in the 2000 Youth World Cup held in Sri Lanka.

But his progress into the first-class cricket for the Sinhalese Sports Club was not smooth as he averaged 31.17 average which failed to attract the attention of the national selectors.

But 2003 saw a turn in his career as he fought his way into the A team. He continued his fine run in 2004 also. During the 2204 New Zealand tour he scored an impresive 322 runs at 53.66 which pushed him into the Test squad for the first time when Sri Lanka toured Zimbabwe in 2004.
