Earlier, he rejected the offer from the National Democratic Alliance as his victory was thought to be impossible because of lack of support from any other front. But when he saw the consolidation of the third front and the NDA , he sensed that he might just make it through cross-voting. No one expected this of him. He should stand aside and let Pratibha Patil get the job. This will ensure that his legacy is not tainted.
