IIT-K reaching for the sky

DIRECTOR OF the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT-K) Dr Sanjay Dhande said that the academic year 2005-2006 had had a successful run and the faculty and students of the institute continued to break new records in research.

Presenting a brief annual report at the 38th convocation of the IIT-K, he said the faculty members and research engineers and scientists were engaged in executing any time about 500 sponsored projects and about 350 consultancy projects. Last year the institute received a total research grant of about Rs 550 million for sponsored projects and Rs 41 million for consultancy projects.

So far the Institute faculties had filed about 14 patents in and outside the country. Due to its high academic records, the Institute was chosen by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) for creating a state of art Nano science and Nano Technology Unit. The unit had taken up a project which had a committed funding of about Rs 12 crore, he added.

Similarly, under the National Mission on Power Electronics Technology, the IIT-K was chosen as one of the major participating institutes for creating a centre of excellence, he said.

Dr Dhande further said that the Institute was in the process of setting up a state of art centre for Micro Beam Facilities. Besides the Institute had been adding several major infrastructural facilities for carrying out multi-disciplinary research and development activities, he added. Referring to placement scenario, Dr Dhande said this year almost 90 per cent B Tech and 80 per cent M Tech students were recruited through the placement office at the Institute.
