IIT-Kharagpur plans medical school by 2009

Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, is planning to set up a medical college- the first such venture by any technology school in the country. The proposal would be submitted to the IIT board of governors and later to the Union Ministry of HRD.

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur, is planning to set up a medical college — the first such venture by any technology school in the country.

The proposal would be submitted to the IIT board of governors and later to the Union Ministry of HRD, IIT, Kharagpur Director SK Dube informed. “The idea is to set up a medical college in IIT.

We will present the proposal to the board of governors soon and once it is ratified, we will send the proposal to the Ministry of HRD,” Dube said. If the proposal is cleared, the medical college will be set up by 2009.

The college will have a strength of 50 students. “We will need the mandatory 400-bed hospital. The total project cost is being estimated at Rs 400-500 crore,” he said. The funds will be raised from within the IIT resources, the Ministry of HRD and the alumni of IIT.
