The ban has been imposed as extraction has not only caused extensive and serious damage to the embankments but also resulted in change in the water course of such water bodies, District Magistrate of Budgam, Mohammad Rafi said in Srinagar on Saturday.

He said massive, unplanned and un-regulated extraction of bed material from water bodies and their transportation over the years has also posed serious threat to life and property in adjacent areas during heavy torrential rains.

Moreover, an adverse impact can be seen on functioning of water supply and irrigation schemes in the district caused due to deepening of beds, Rafi said.

He appealed to the public to extend full cooperation to the district administration.
