The MDMK General Secretary Mr. Vaiko on Sunday urged the Centre to immediately seek the Intervention of the UN Security Council to stop the war in Northern Sri Lanka as the humanitarian crisis there worsened.
“The UN Security Council must immediately intervene and send its troops to end the war in Sri Lanka as it did in Kosovo and India at least now should facilitate this process,” Vaiko told reporters in Chennai after releasing the MDMK’s LS poll manifesto.
Mr. Vaiko termed the DMK leader, Mr. M. Karunanidhi’s plea to the Centre to “sever diplomatic ties” with Sri Lanka as a gimmick “to garner votes” in the LS polls in Tamil Nadu.If anything, this should have been done at least a year back, he countered.
The condition of at least five women of a group undertaking an indefinite fast in the MDMK party premises here seeking
the intervention of the Congress Chairperson, Ms. Sonia Gandhi to pressure Sri Lanka to stop the war against the Tamils there, has turned critical, Vaiko said, adding, Mr. Karunanidhi had not even enquired about their health condition.
To a query, Vaiko said the AIADMK leader, Ms. Jayalalithaa, “is a dynamic leader with vast abilities”. “She can communicate to the people of India in different Languages and she is a fit candidate for the Prime Minister’s post.” “When the occasion arises, I will raise my voice in her support,” the MDMK leader added.
