Mukherjee is visiting the island nation at the invitation of his Maldivian counterpart Ismail Shafeeu.
During his visit, he will have extensive talks with Shafeeu and Foreign Minister of Maldives Ahmed Shaheed on bilateral cooperation and regional security issues, an official release said on Thursday.
The Defence Minister will also call on President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.
Named after one of the islands of the Andaman and Nicobar chain, the INS Tillanchang, built by Defence Public Sector Undertaking, Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata was inducted into Indian Navy five years ago.
The 260 tonne Trinkat class fast attack craft is fitted with state-of-the-art navigation aids, communication and GMDSS systems, which facilitate its role-worthiness and effectiveness in operational missions, air operations, safe navigation and survival at sea.
After the formal transfer of the ship to the Maldivian authorities by the Defence Minister, the Fast Attack Craft (FAC) which is specifically designed and armed to detect and destroy fast moving surface craft or intercepting vessels engaged in illegal activities such as poaching or smuggling, will be renamed the HURAVEE after a Maldivian hero and freedom fighter, under the Maldives flag.
