Indian soccer fans let their hair down

The beer guzzling, kebab munching football fraternity of Delhi might limit their ardour for the game to pubs and joints. But the frenzy for the biggest soccer event, which kicks off this Friday has swept the Red strongholds of Kerala and West Bengal.

The beer guzzling, kebab munching football fraternity of Delhi might limit their ardour for the game to pubs and joints. But the frenzy for the biggest soccer event, which kicks off this Friday has swept the Red strongholds of Kerala and West Bengal.

In tea shops in Kerala’s Malapppuram and Kozhikode districts, conversation hoves around football and not politics. But it is the hair-style of the players that is in great demand. In soccer crazy Kolkata, the demand is for Beckham’s hair-do. "Style-wise, I do support Beckham,” says Dipendu Saha, a fan of Brazil.

Surprisingly, the style quotient of the Germans, a not-so-popular side among football lovers of the city, is becoming popular among college-goers. A top favourite is Michael Ballack's hairdo.

"I am a supporter of Brazil. But Brazilian footballers have either short or  really long hair,  like Ronaldinho. I like Michael Ballack's hairstyle. I’m trying to get a haircut like him," said Surajit Saha,  a young football enthusiast.
