Indian wins world meteorology award
Gurfran Beig has received the Norbert Gerber-Mumm Award for 2005.
Gurfran Beig of the Indian Institute of Meteorology, Pune, is among 18 international scientists to bag world meteorological award for research on temperature trends.
Norbert Gerber-Mumm International Award for 2005 by the World Meteorological Organisation in Geneva was given to the scientist on Wednesday for his research paper "Review of Mesospheric Temperature Trends", in Geneva.
The award is given annually to an original scientific paper on the influence of meteorology on various fields or influences of other fields on meteorology.
Beig's team was involved in a comprehensive review of long-term trends in the temperature from 50 to 100 kms in the atmosphere due to human induced effects like greenhouse gases. The research paper was published in 2003 in the Reviews of Geophysics.
The team came to the conclusion that the changes due to human activity could result in effect on radio and TV communications, space vehicles and possible effects on climate and weather patterns.
