Indians at Intl Confectionery Show

Spices and crisps from India are on display at the largest confectionary show in Germany.

There has been a sharp increase in the number of Asian countries attending this year's International Confectionery Show here with spices and crisps from India among the offerings, organisers say.

The leading show of its kind, known under its German acronym ISM, has attracted around 100 exhibitors from China, Malaysia, South Korea, Taiwan and elsewhere.

Snacks such as rice crackers or different combinations of spices from countries like India are just some of the Asian offerings. But chocolate and ice cream are also on show.

One of the products that has attracted attention is an Indian firm's crisps made from dried tropical fruits such as mango and papaya.

"We have a lot of good ideas from Asia," said a spokeswoman for the organisers Monday. The steady increase in the number of exhibitors shows more and more Asian firms are gaining export potential, she added.

One Japanese manufacturer is showing a sugar-free strawberry lollipop with two different taste sensations - one side warm, the other refreshingly cool, according to the spokeswoman.

There are also Japanese biscuit rolls with chocolate on the inside to stop people from getting sticky fingers.

More than 1,600 exhibitors from 72 countries are taking part in the trade fair, which opened Sunday and runs until Wednesday.
