Inter-district robber gang busted; eight arrested

Eight members of an inter-district gang of robbers, involved in loot and robbery in eastern districts of Uttar Pradesh, were arrested, police said.

Eight members of an inter-district gang of robbers, involved in loot and robbery in eastern districts of Uttar Pradesh, were arrested, police said.

The gang used to loot copper wires and other metal equipments from electric sub-stations, they said.

The group was involved in robbery at over a dozen electric sub-stations in Faizabad, Pratapgarh, Jaunpur and Sultanpur, they added.

Elaborating on the modus operandi, they said, around nine to ten persons targetted electric sub-stations in remote places, and loot copper wires and other metal equipments.

The members of the gang took sub-station staff hostage and target cable wires from electric poles a few kilometres.

The latest robbery, in which the gang was involved is at Sohawal electric sub-station in Faizabad district, few days ago, where, they took hostage the incharge of the station, Tayyab Ahmad and decamped with copper wires and other metals including Ahmad's cell phone, they said.

The gang was also involved in highway robbery, where they used to puncture tyres of trucks and tankers, overpower the drivers and their assistants and decamp with valuables and cash.

The gang was traced through electronic surveillance connected to the mobile phone of Sohawal electric sub-station incharge Tayyab Ahmad cell phone.

Faizabad Senior Superintendent of Police S N Singh said the gang was traced by various inputs provided by informers and other systems, for which the Special Operation Group was constituted and arrested eight persons.
