Two Olympic officials familiar with the case tell The Associated Press that the IOC launched a disciplinary case on Thursday against Alex Schwazer. He was removed from the team by the Italian Olympic Committee on Monday after testing positive for EPO in a pre-competition test.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation hasn't been officially announced.

Schwazer, who won the 50-kilometer race walk at the 2008 Beijing Games, has insisted he was clean at the time.

The IOC is now considering retesting his Beijing samples.

Previous retroactive tests of Beijing samples caught five athletes for use of blood-booster CERA.
