IN A major upset on the sixth day of the 31st Udai-Iftekhar All India Cricket Tournament, the star-studded BSNL team on Saturday suffered 44-run defeat against IPC XI. Murtuza Ali was declared HT Man of the Match.

It was the second consecutive win for IPC. Earlier, IPC won the match against Gwalior Division. Once again after winning the toss, IPC opted to bat first. After a bad start by openers Mohsin Hasan and Sohail Masood, who came out at one and two down, respectively, played with responsibility.

Mohsin was the HT Man of the Match against Gwalior Division. Playing cautiously, both batsmen stitched an important partnership of 84 runs. Both the batsmen did not attempt any delivery that could have proved dangerous. In his 62 runs innings off 94 balls, Mohsin smashed nine boundaries. Sohail, who completed his half-century off 85 deliveries, scored two boundaries.

Their good performance motivated three and four down Praveen and Murtuza Ali, respectively. Praveen contributed 58 runs off 53 deliveries. In his quick fire innings, Murtuza Ali entertained spectators by his long shots. His 61 runs included two lofty sixes and six boundaries.

With the help of four half centuries, IPC scored 282 runs in 50 overs for the loss of six wickets. BSNL team consisting of players like JP Yadav, Mohnish Mishra, Brijesh Tomar, Raja Ali, Sanjay Pandey went down while chasing the target of less than six runs per over.

Opening for the side, Mohnish Mishra played according to expectations. He scored highest 76 runs from the team. But the gutsy batsmen disappointed the spectators by unnecessarily throwing away his wicket. Lokras caught him out on the delivery of Asad Baig at mid-on. Just the ball before, the same player took his catch at the same spot. However, the umpire called it no ball because of overstepping.

The only international cricketer from the City, JP Yadav was the other batsman, who failed to play according to expectations. He lost his wicket at his individual score of four runs.

Except Ankit Shrivastava, there was no other batsman in the middle order stand against the lethal bowling attack of IPC. He scored 53 runs.

BSNL lost all wickets for 238 runs. Asad and Shantanu shared three wickets each. DGP Swaraj Puri awarded HT Man of the Match trophy to Murtuza Ali.

Match on Sunday: Kamla Club Kanpur vs Sonat Club.
