Vice president Taha Yassin Ramadan was also present at the meeting, footage of which was broadcast as US troops battled with Iraqi forces in Saddam's main presidential compound in central Baghdad.

Saddam has recently been shown frequently on television to demonstrate he is still in charge, chairing a meeting of top aides on Saturday and walking the streets of Baghdad on Friday.
