The West Asia crisis is likely to flare up (On the road to peace, July 20). Israel is a small country besieged by hostile neighbours, but it has shown the courage and the will to survive. Israel’s use of force is not unjustifiable, since it is defending itself against attacks by the Hezbollah. But the long-term solution, as David Danieli states, lies in diplomatic parleys.

US double-talk

I agree with Vikram Sood (Grand Illusion, July 19) that America will attempt to trap India into signing the NPT, block our capability to possess further nuclear weapons and also subject us to a regimen of inspections. Brahma Chellaney (Trick and teat, July 18) airs identical fears and apprehensions. It must be ensured that India is not subjected to humiliating conditions that will clip our wings.

The US’s insistence that India should furnish hard evidence before levelling allegations of abetting terrorism against Pakistan is curious. One wonders what kind of evidence it produced before attacking Iraq. In fact, America does not treat terrorism elsewhere in the same manner as on its own soil.

It is just a matter of time before the enormity of dealing with the double-crossing Pakistan overwhelms it.

Monsoon deluge

It took just a few monsoon showers to expose the inefficiency of Delhi’s civic authorities and with it started blame game politics. Desilting the drains before the onset of monsoons is common sense action, which our city fathers seem ignore time and again.
Ultimately, the victim is the honest taxpayer who can do nothing when his hard-earned money goes down the drain.

No civic sense

Abhishek Singhvi’s analysis (City limits, July 19) of civic sense is biased as it gives the government a clean chit. Unless a government has a sense of responsibility, it cannot expect its citizens to exercise civic sense.
