The ghostly tales came from two villages in Jharkhand's Dumka district, 500 km from Ranchi, with locals complaining that a ghost appeared at night and at early mornings. More intriguingly, it appeared to haunt women more than men.
The alacrity with which the police reacted and filed a first information report (FIR) against the ghost took everyone quite by surprise.
According to local reports, the complaints came from the two villages of Raneshwar and Sikaripara.
One resident was quoted as saying that a "ghost with red spots and glowing coals all over appeared" when he went to relieve himself in the fields at night.
"I have ordered the local police stations to inquire into the matter. It seems that some lumpen elements are involved in the acts," said Dumka police chief Sido Hembrom.
