Isn’t it a sad end to a pair that has given so many hits?
It is but what can I say now. It’s God’s wish. He wanted us to part ways, I guess.

How special is Fanaa?
Very special. First, it’s a Yash Raj film. They have a good ear for music. They know what they want. We also have two great actors - Aamir Khan and Kajol. Their chemistry makes it easier.

What is so unique about Fanaa’s music?
The approach to the music in this film is not conventional. We have given different treatment to all the songs keeping the melody alive. Lyrics have a lot of freshness. We have experimented a lot in terms of voices. We have got the songs sung by Sunidhi, Mahalaxmi Iyer, Shaan, Sonu Nigaam and even Aamir and Kajol. Since the film is North Indian and has lot of Urdu, we have given the music accordingly.

Which is your most special track in the film?

I love the romantic song

Dekho na

. It’s sung by Sonu Nigaam and Sunidhi Chauhan. Also there’s a patriotic song called

Des rangila

sung by Mahalaxmi, which is very melodious. We didn’t try to make it sound like in-your-face patriotism but the emotion comes across very nicely.

Will Jatin be the same without Lalit?
I don’t know. I really can’t say anything. It’s really not in our hand. Lalit is a very good musician. I wish him luck.

Which has been your most cherished composition?
We have a very good track record as a duo. We love all our songs. Yes Boss, Khamoshi, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge and Hum Tum — all the movies we worked on had good music.

What’s next?
I am working on Arindam Chaudhuri’s next film.

l Will it be the same without each other?
It is a difficult decision, but you have to take it when you find you are not comfortable working with each other. You have to choose. Parting is always painful, especially since we have been the most successful music director duo over the years.

Do we hear a different Jatin-Lalit in Fanaa?
Different in terms of execution but we decided that melody has to be strong. You know times have changed and you have to move ahead. There was no intention to compose differently consciously.

You have given Aamir some of his most memorable tracks. How has the association been?
We have had a great association with Aamir and have given him four successful films like Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander, Ghulam, Sarfarosh and now Fanaa. He is a brand in his own right and so is Kajol, with whom we have had our most successful film, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jaayenge. Both are true professionals, I must say.

Which is your favourite track from Fanaa?
All are my favourite but if I have to pick then Chaand sifarish and Mere haath mein.

Was the pressure unprecedented since this was to be your last film together?
There was pressure but there’s no point succumbing to it. It is better to put your heart and soul into your work. We knew we had to compose something that will touch our heart and hence people’s hearts.

What’s next as a solo composer?
I have finished composing for a Bengali film, Bidhatar Khela, directed by Raja Mukerji. And then there are films with Tips and Saregama that are coming up.
