If the plans of the Jharkhand Academic Council (JAC) fall in place, English could soon become medium of 'instruction' in Government schools in the State.

The council would identify schools where teaching could be done through English medium and then give recognition to such schools.

Talking to HT, JAC Chairman Dr Shaligram Yadav said that till now Hindi, Urdu, Bangla and Oriya were mediums of instruction in the schools affiliated to the JAC. However, students are allowed to answer in English. "If students are allowed to write answers in English, there is no harm in making English a medium of instruction," he said.

Yadav said that the proposal would be sent to the Human Resource Development (HRD) Department for its approval.
