Yoga Guru Baba Ramdev, whose prowess in holding his breath is well known, will now hold up legislative business of a state for an entire week. The Jharkhand government is putting off its budget session, slated to start next month, as its MLAs don't want to miss Baba's week-long camp in Ranchi.

Instead of February 20, as it was planned earlier, the session will now begin on February 27, sources in the state's Cabinet Coordination Department said. Governor Syed Sibte Razi gave his approval for the date on Monday evening.

The yoga guru would hold the camp as a state guest in Ranchi from February 19. More than 25,000 tickets have been sold for the camp, with many MLAs purchasing the Rs 250, Rs 500, Rs 1,100 and Rs 2,100 denomination tickets.

Even chief minister Arjun Munda, who in any case is reviewing preparations for the camp and has purchased five tickets for himself and his family, is expected to attend the camp on all days.

A senior cabinet department official said they feared that most legislators "may skip the assembly session to attend the yoga camp". Therefore, they felt the best alternative was to defer the budget session.

Though February 20 had not been stated in writing for the start of the assembly session, the Speaker and the chief minister had agreed to propose it to the governor. But later, the camp came up and the legislators requested that the government defer the budget session by a week.

Under the present schedule, the session would have a six-day break for Holi from March 12 to 17.
