The victim, Zahida Nisha, was staying with her married sister Mehrul Nisha and her husband Firoz Khan at Sector-23 in Raj Nagar.

“Two months back, Firoz’s younger brother Afroz Khan, who stays at Pratap Vihar with his parents, had sent a marriage proposal for my sister, which she spurned. She wanted to concentrate on her studies and career,” said Mehrul.

Around 6.30am on Wednesday, Afroz came to his brother’s house and entered Zahida’s room while the family was busy in the daily chores.

“He entered the victim’s room while she was asleep, poured petrol and set her on fire. When the family members raised an alarm, he fled the spot. The victim was rushed to a private hospital with serious burn injuries,” superintendent of police (SP) SS Yadav said.

The victim has suffered more than 50 per cent burns and her condition is critical.

The police said that the accused had brought around two litres of petrol with him.

“We have decided to slap the National Security Act (NSA) on the accused,” Yadav said.

Afroz, an unemployed graduate, was arrested on Wednesday evening from his relative’s residence at Morta area on NH-58.
