They were angry at the civic authorities failure to clean drains in the locality.

Residents said they had been facing insanitary conditions for a long time. While staging the dharna, demonstrators parked garbage-laden vehicles in the area.

They added that the area faced an outbreak of infectious diseases very often, but there was no one to look after sanitary work.

Candidates for the post of corporator also threw in their lot with the protesters.

They included Congress candidate Mohd. Yaqoob Qureshi, the Samajwadi Party’s Shahid Ali Khan `Munna’ and the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Dr Sanjay Singh.

Supporters of these candidates raised slogans against their poll rivals.
