With three World Cups already under his belt, Rhodes is one of the most experienced men in the South African squad and fans will be savouring his return to action on home turf.
Since taking a dramatic dive at the stumps to run out Inzamam-ul-Haq and stop Pakistan in their tracks at the 1992 World Cup, he has carved out a unique position as the world's top fielder.
Athletic, exuberant and tenacious, the 33-year-old still stands head and shoulders above the rest in fielding - worth his place on his performances at point and mid-wicket alone.
His batting is often over-looked, despite averaging around the mid-thirties with more than 30 half-centuries.
As a natural leader, his influence on the rest of the team in the dressing room, and on the field, cannot be denied.
He announced his retirement from Test cricket in 2001 in order to stretch his career to a fourth World Cup and it is a decision that could pay off and secure success for the home side.
