Supporters of Thakur were seen dancing and distributing sweets across the district.

Earlier, there were reports that Thakur was being replaced by Parvesh Verma of Delhi for the coveted post. However, the party bosses decided to give one more term to Thakur in view of his performance.

Anurag Thakur is the elder son of senior BJP leader and former HP chief minister Prem Kumar Dhumal.

Sources in the BJP told HT that proximity of Dhumal with the top leadership of the party, especially Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi, LK Advani, Sushma Swaraj and even the party chief Rajnath Singh, had paid dividends for the family.

Insiders say friendship of Dhumal and Modi was deep rooted. It was evident during the recent assembly elections, when Modi, despite elections in his own state, spared time to address a number of election meetings in Himachal Pradesh.

Insiders say when it was speculated that Thakur was being replaced as BJYM chief, Modi and Advani personally sounded Rajnath Singh not to effect this change.

Second term for thakur has dashed the hopes of the local Congress leaders to wrest the Hamirpur parliamentary seat from the BJP.
