Kanda 'concealed' assets details from govt

The absconding member of legislative assembly from Sirsa and an important constituent of Bhupinder Singh Hooda government, Gopal Kanda, is accused of concealing his current financial status from the state government.
Kanda, wanted by Delhi police in a case of abetment to suicide his employee Geetika Sharma, is running away from the police for the last eight days.
According to the information gathered by HT, Kanda did not pay any heed to the repeated communications from the state government to declare his assets including the income, liabilities etc.
According to the code of conduct, the ministers should declare their assets to the chief minister.
As per a reply furnished by the chief secretary office under the Right to Information on May 18, 2012 (HT has a copy), the state government has confirmed that despite repeated reminders in the last three years, Kanda and the health minister Rao Narender Singh did not submit their personal assets details to the state government.
A MLA from his home town Sirsa, Kanda had extended his support to the Congress which was short of clear-cut majority to form government in 2009.
Known for his proximity with the National Lok Dal supreme Om Prakash Chaulata, Kanda had suddenly shifted his stance in 2009 when he decided to contest from Sirsa.
In lieu of support at the crucial juncture, Hooda bestowed Kanda minister of state for Home (as Hooda's junior minister) in November 2009 even as the Independent MLA was facing several criminal cases.

Once assumed his ministerial berth, Kanda started ignoring the repeated notices to declare his assets.
During the 2009 assembly elections, he had declared their financial status to the Election Commission.
According to the commission's website at the time of elections Kanda had declared his moveable property worth Rs 51.16 crore and immovable property at Rs. 12 crore.
Till 2009, the MLA had a declared financial liability to the tune of Rs. 6.42 lakh towards credit cards of various banks.
Three years ago, Kanda's wife Sarwaswati owned agriculture land worth Rs. 1.50 crore, a commercial building of Rs 30 crore and a home in Gurgaon worth Rs. 3.85 crore.
An under metric Kanda started his career as a shoe seller in Sirsa and within few years built his multi-million business house Murli Dhar Lakh Ram (MDLR) of which he is the managing director.
The known business of the MDLR group includes real estate, hospitality and a defunct airline.
