Karnataka batsmen seem to be following the advice of their coach Sanath Kumar well. Kumar wanted them to take the tie against hosts Uttar Pradesh as an opportunity to prepare for the knockouts.
His batsmen, knowing they are through to the next round, did exactly that and posted a healthy 274/7 at the end of Day One of their Elite Group B Ranji Trophy match here.
Skipper Vinay Kumar was smiling as soon he made the right call and chose to bat first. Though the top order bastmen KB Pawan (13), Robin Uthappa (4) and Ganesh Satish (3) departed in quick succession to leave the side reeling at 3/28, others held their nerves to keep the UP bowling attack at bay.
Manish Pandey made a 71-ball 36 before he was trapped leg before by leggie Piyush Chawla. Thereafter, Amit Verma (54, 126b, 7x4), Vinay Kumar (51, 94b, 9x4) and CM Gautam (62*, 105b, 6x4) made merry against the UP bowling, which missed the services of injured Sudeep Tyagi, Praveen Kumar and last-minute pullout Rudra Pratap Singh, who withdrew due to some infection.
Karnataka 274/7 (M Pandey 71, A Verma 54, C Gautam 62*)
