Arvind Kejriwal might not have won Sheila Dikshit’s chief ministerial seat, but he will soon replace her in the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC). Surendra Singh, his party’s winning candidate from Delhi Cantonment, will also join him in the council, replacing the BJP’s Karan Singh Tanwar.
The NDMC, which has MLAs from constituencies falling under its area as its members, will now see a refresh after the results of the assembly elections.
Kejriwal, AAP’s convenor, defeated Dikshit by 25,864 votes from the New Delhi constituency while Singh, a former NSG commando deployed during the Taj Hotel terrorist attacks in Mumbai, beat Tanwar by a narrow margin of 355 votes.
NDMC chairperson Jalaj Shrivastava told HT the council was now waiting for the election commission’s (EC’s) customary nod before going ahead with it. "The council will have to be reconstituted now. We will have to move it for the Lieutenant Governor’s approval. Once the EC notification is given, we will move it," Shrivastava said.
At the three corporations of the city, too, several councillors have won the polls and are awaiting the EC’s formal notification.
From the North Corporation, standing committee chairman Ram Kishan Singhal has won from Adarsh Nagar while leader of the House Mahendar Nagpal has been victorious from the Wazirpur seat.
From the South civic body, standing committee chairman Rajesh Gehlot has won from Matiala while Anil Sharma has defeated AAP’s Shazia Ilmi Malik in the RK Puram seat.
In East, the winning councilors are BJP’s Jitender Singh Shanty from Shahdara and AAP candidates Vinod Singh Binny from Laxminagar and Mahinder Yadav from Vikaspuri.
"We are still corporators. On Tuesday, I will attend a budget meeting," Mahendar Nagpal said.
