Having been in the industry for the past 13 years, fashion designer Jattinn Kochhar never really had the luck to get people to sit up and take notice of his creations. Now he’s back with a line that has less of glamour and something that would hopefully have mass appeal: A khadi line.

“The idea is to do clothes in numbers. It’s totally deglamorised, wearable and all we have done is add spunk to khadi by giving it new designs,” says Kochhar.

Kochhar has experimented with khadi by giving it trendy oriental sleeves, faux leather, diagonal stripes as well as using it with knit fabrics. “There is just so much one can do with this natural fabric. In fact we’ve also done a bit of work on this material with the hand,” adds Kochhar.

What got him to get into pret, a line that isn’t quite popular with the Indian fashion fraternity? “It was a tailor-made opportunity that came my way. Not many would know that khadi has a turnover of Rs 10,500 crore and a network of about 5,000 counters across the country. The potential is immense, especially when it comes to export. For instance, there is a ready market for khadi in Japan.”

Kochhar announces that his next project would be designing maternity wear in khadi. “I had designed all the clothes for my wife when she was expecting and more than anything else, I feel that one doesn’t get comfortable clothes in this country for expectant mothers,” he avers.

Fabric Of The Masses
Four reasons why khadi is hot:

Durable:
one can wash it at home. And suddenly a large number of people have started to opt for natural fabrics.

Handwoven: As it is hand-woven, there are fewer chances of two garments having the same texture

Price: Affordability is one of the main reasons that attracts the customers to buy this material

Mix and Match: Khadi looks great with formal yet informal attire
