Kiran Sen: Directing success in 9 days
Johnny D catches up with Kiran who directed her debut film in nine days!
We have seen a lot of women directors making some real good films, like Aparna Sen (15 Park Avenue), Shonali Bose (Amu), Ruchi Narain (Kal – Yesterday & Tomorrow), Vinta Nanda (White Noise), Kalpana Lajmi (Chingaari) and others. Here comes another debutante lady director, who has made a new record to wrap up a movie in just nine days!

Surprised? Well, unlike others, Kiran Sen has been very quiet about her project. She completed her English Yin & Yang in nine days in London.
Kiran Sen has earlier produced her husband Kallol Sen’s debut film, Kabhi Socha Bhi Na Tha (KSBNT). Now, she has added a new feather to her cap. She discloses, "Kallol has written the film and he was supposed to direct the movie but since we had too many projects and less time, he handed over the baton to me, while he was directing other film simultaneously in other location. It was a challenge that I took up and surprised myself when we wrapped up the movie in mere nine days (December 2 – 10, 2005)."

The film stars Jessica (English actress), former Miss Romania Alex and Indian model turned actor Ajay Balhara.
Yin & Yang
is realistic in its content. It deals with a woman in her thirties, who is very ambitious, practical and wants a child without marriage because her biological clock is clicking.
Kiran discloses, "
Yin & Yang
is a global subject that is prevalent in almost every country. With working women living independently to fulfill their ambition, life is getting very fast and tedious." The writer Kallol Sen adds, "
Yin & Yang
will have a global release as it will be released exclusively in multiplexes. The reason I wrote
Yin & Yang
is because life has become very fast paced yet every Yin must have a Yang to complete the cycle. I am sure people will relate with the real problems in one’s life."
Currently busy with post-production work of
Yin &
Yang,
Kiran Sen is going to be a lady to reckon with. She has created a new record by completing the shoot of a film in record nine days. When we make her did she realised the fact? She smiles and says, "I really never realised (completing the shoot in mere nine days) because it was a challenge thrown by my husband out of the blue. I had to help him out. Also being a woman, it was a challenge to create something beautiful and I accepted it. The film was tough to direct but deep down while Kallol wrote it from male’s point of view, I directed it from a woman’s point of view."
Artiskinky, the production house of the Sens, is ready for the film’s release sometime in March. The production house is ready with six films (five shot in London) and will release them one after the other from March 2006.
What was the toughest part of directing a subject like Yin & Yang? Kiran is honest to confess, "There are three different kinds of love making scenes, which was indeed tough to direct. I had to differentiate each from the other, which is the crux of the suspense and I guess it was really a testing time for me. One will realize what I am saying when they will see the film. Also, I didn’t shot extra footage as normally all directors do because I knew exactly where my film was going. The film will have a time of 1 hour 55 minutes and we are working hard with its post production now."
We ask her as to what is the USP of Yin & Yang? She concludes, "Yin & Yang is the bitter reality of life. A woman or man may be powerful in her or his own way but the fact is that they need each other to complete the circle of life. It is a balancing act!"
While she has done the balancing act to play the roles of a wife, producer and director – Kiran Sen has surely put a challenge to other woman directors to shoot their film in less than nine days now!
