KJ Rao, the Election Commission's point man who acted tough to ensure a free and fair poll in Bihar has decided to call it a day.

Rao who was successful in weeding out bogus names in the rolls in West Bengal had retired four years ago but continued with the commission in various capacities.

The 64-year-old Rao, who worked with the commission for decades, declined a fresh offer to continue for "personal reasons".

Rao was also a member of the investigation team that probed the malpractices in Amethi, the constituency of late Rajiv Gandhi, in 1989.
