A heavy downpour on late Monday dislodged cut logs piled up on a hilltop behind a village in the district of Sandakan, causing a landslide which damaged 14 houses, said Sandakan fire chief Joe Sipijoh.

Firemen recovered the bodies of Saratul Sabdullah, 35, Suria Hasiri, 2, and Norafizah Hasiri, 2 months, from under the rubble of their house, he was quoted as saying by the national Bernama news agency.

He said the three were believed to have been asleep when the landslide occurred, but Saratul's two other children were rescued by neighbours while her husband was away at work at the time.

No other casualties were reported but occupants of 30 other houses in the village were evacuated amid fears of more landslides because of rainy weather, he added.
