Law will take its own course, says Biman Bose

Reacting to the President's rejection of the mercy petition of Dhananjoy Chatterjee, sentenced to death for rape and murder, West Bengal's ruling Left Front Chairman Biman Bose on Wednesday said "the law will take its own course" in the matter as long as there is provision for capital punishment in the country.

Reacting to the President's rejection of the mercy petition of Dhananjoy Chatterjee, sentenced to death for rape and murder, West Bengal's ruling Left Front Chairman Biman Bose on Wednesday said "the law will take its own course" in the matter as long as there is provision for capital punishment in the country.

Stating that it was his personal comment, Bose added he, however, preferred a debate on capital punishment per se.

"Many people have expressed their personal views on this and for the time being I reserve my comment for I am not used to making individual comments on issues like this," Bose, who is also the CPI(M) Politburo member, told reporters after the meeting of the Left Front Committee during the day.

Dhananjoy was sentenced to death by a Calcutta Sessions Court on August 12, 1991 for the rape and murder of schoolgirl Hetal Parekh in 1990 and the order was confirmed by the Calcutta High Court. The Supreme Court had also upheld the conviction and sentence in January, 1994.
