Lazy governance

No one seems to have learnt any lesson from the similar tragedies in the past. Announcing compensation even before the fire is doused speaks volumes of the ineptitude by political leaders.

The report (Brand India fair in flames in Meerut, over 50 die, April 11) saddens. The report will identify the cause of the fire. What is deplorable is the way authorities gave permission to organise the fair without considering the security aspect.

Everybody is talking about the arrest of organisers while it’s a clear case of corruption. The organisers are legally responsible but the administration is legally and morally responsible. The administration’s duty is to take care of the people. We have a recent example in the case of MCD engineers being dismissed for turning a blind eye to illegal construction in Delhi. The officials in Meerut should also be charged for mass murder.

Had the administration been pre-emptive, people wouldn’t have died. But the real pain was in the administration using bulldozers to extract the dead bodies from the debris. It shows that human life has no value for the erring organisers and administrative machinery.

Unfavourable policy

The editorial Failing the farmer (April 10) bears a testimony to the administrative indifference in Punjab. Selling his land may rid a farmer of his monetary woes, but it also snatches from him his source of livelihood.

There are few exit options for a farmer who is planning to sell his land. We need favourable policies because if the inhabitants are sidelined, how can we dream of a prosperous State?

Justice done

The punishment meted out to Salman Khan is justified. Responsibility must accompany fame. If a common man commits a crime, he is punished for just that crime. But if a celebrity commits a crime, he influences many minds and must be punished harshly for being irresponsible towards the society.
