LETTER TO THE EDITOR| Misuse of public money

The pre-budget session of the Madhya Pradesh Assembly met in Bhopal on December 23, 2005, but adjourned on that day for January 2, 2006, after obituary references to the prominent personalities of India and the State who had passed away since the last session of the Assembly.

I was taken aback at this long adjournment and wondered why the session could not have been convened on January 2, 2006, instead of December 23, 2005. The long beak of nine days including two Saturdays and two Sundays was under taken to enable the member of the ruling party in M.P. to attend the silver jubilee session of the Bharatiya Janata Party and related activities in Mumbai.

When I enquired about this from a retired senior officer of the Assembly, I was told that this course was adopted to enable the members to claim allowance for the entire period when most of the MLAS were in Mumbai.

This is a gross misuse of the tax-payer’s hard-earned money which is meant for the bona fide functioning of the legislature. We do not need operation Duryodhan to find out how the legislators are making money in the name of the Assembly. I hope this will not be repeated in future.
