talks about her latest film
Marley and Me
, co-star Owen Wilson [who understands her humour], John Mayor, the musician who stole her heart, and a lot more...
What was it that hooked you into Marley and Me?
I think it’s a beautiful story. I loved that it was a true story and I loved that it was the portrait of a marriage with this dog who supports them on this journey. It’s amazing how you can chronicle a life spent together with an animal.
Are you pleased with the film?
Yes I am. I think it’s pretty special and I think John Grogan is such a wonderful writer. I had never played a part like this where I was spanning 15 years of a life and then ending up with three children and a family.
How was it working with David Frankel [director] and Owen Wilson? Do you have a shared sense of humour?
I met David and I found him so lovely. He has such a great heart. And Owen and I — we were firing off each other constantly. Absolutely — with some of the most ridiculous humour ever. It’s so much fun when somebody gets your sense of humour and God knows I’ve been around some who don’t and that’s so frustrating. To have to explain your jokes? Oh no. I think that’s such a sign of intelligence if you get the joke. <b1>
Are you seeing a lot of material, scripts, that you like at the moment?
Yeah. And I’ve also been developing projects for the last two years with my partner, movies that I really want to be a part of. Our company is called Echo Films. And we have at least three or four solid films that we think are nearly ready and I think one will probably start filming very soon.
What do you like to do with your life away from work? What do you enjoy?
I’m pretty easy to please. I like to go to the movies. I like to visit with friends. Usually when I’m not working I’m catching up with all my friends that I miss terribly when I’m away.
Tell us about John Mayer...
He’s a rare one. He is extraordinary and it is wonderful to watch him…the way his brain works and the way he thinks thoughts…it’s beautiful. It’s an amazing thing to watch a musician think. I don’t know many musicians but when his guitar is on him it’s just like a channel. It’s something I’ve never ever seen before.
Is this a happy time in your life?
Yes, this might well be the happiest time of my life. Yeah, I’m a lucky girl. I just feel like I’m literally coming into my own — with my body, with myself. It’s fantastic.
