Loos it like Beckham

Victoria Beckham, one-time Posh Spice, the village girl turned designer label junkie wife of footballer David Beckham, turned 30 yesterday. He must be hoping the £1 million pink diamond and the £200,000 eternity ring he gave her on the occasion will help their relationship, after the recent storm over a sex scandal involving him.
It began quite suddenly, with a set of articles by his alleged lover Rebecca Loos in best-selling British tabloid News of the World that began appearing on April 4. In the articles, Beckham's former personal assistant claimed to have had a three-month affair with him when he was in Madrid. The attractive 26-year-old was soon on television telling a record viewership that Beckham was "an amazing lover" and made her feel like "the most special woman in the world". All that Beckham and his wife could manage was to say that her claims — about having slept with him — were "ludicrous".
"I could see in his eyes that he was lonely, that he just needed a companion, that he just wanted someone to be with", said Rebecca. She wasn't in love with him, she added, "but had our relationship together happened any longer than it did I think it would have definitely headed that way".
The affair had apparently started quite suddenly. Beckham and Rebecca had gone to a pub with other friends. They were a few drinks down when Beckham called for a ‘truth or dare'. He asked her to walk around the place with toilet paper sticking out of her trousers. She did. When they were leaving that night, he allegedly invited her to his hotel room, and they spent the night together.
Next morning, he was up before her. "When I woke up, he was already in the shower. He had to go for training; he had ordered breakfast … He brought it in." The experience left her feeling "breathless" and "very happy", she said. "I was smiling. I got home, and my mother said, 'where have you slept? Where have you spent the night?' She could tell by the look on my face".
Her mother told her to be careful. "I hope you know what you are doing", she told Rebecca. "You're putting your job on the line…there's a family involved". She knew what she was getting into, says Rebecca, but she wasn't able to stop herself.
She did lose her job when rumours of her involvement with Beckham began to do the rounds in Madrid. In December, Beckham shifted his account from SFX, the firm she worked for. She had to leave the company. She has since found employment as personal assistant to a bank managing director, but after the Beckham scandal is well and truly sold, she'll probably have more in the bank than her new boss.
Her disclosures to News of the World were reportedly made after the paper paid her £350,000. The television interview to Sky One is said to have cost the satellite channel £150,000. So she's already made £500,000 from her affair. A media expert and former editor of British tabloid Daily Mirror told AFP, "If this figure is true it would be, I imagine, the most expensive deal ever".
Kiss and tell stories have never made so much money though Monica Lewinsky came close. In 1999, Britain's Channel 4 had paid her £400,000 for an interview. Princess Diana's former butler, Paul Burrell, sold his story for £300,000 to Daily Mirror in 2002.
Rebecca says she is willing to prove her claims. "People are calling me a liar and calling me names, but at the end of the day these are the facts", she said on TV. She initially came out with some very graphic SMS text messages as evidence. In one, he had written about her being 'all wet' etc.
Further 'proof' will come in court if the case ends up there, she says. "There is something I know about him, an intimate part of his body that I think only women who've been in bed with him would know". She was asked on TV whether the 'mark' had anything to do with circumcision but replied, "I'm not going into that. If I ever do need to talk about that it will be in court, not on television".
The Beckham camp has been saying it's willing to go to court. They say Rebecca broke a confidentiality agreement, and hint at foul play, saying that Rebecca was responsible for organising Beckham's mobile phone in Spain.
The scandal has also spread to other parts of the world, with an Australian sometime model, Sarah Marbeck, also laying claim to having bedded Beckham in Singapore. Her claim turned out to be rather flimsy: she's alleged to be a call girl who worked for an escort service. Friends have described her as 'erratic'.
There is, however, a credible gay connection to the story. Rebecca Loos is reputed to be bisexual. The Sunday Mirror named a lesbian TV presenter as her partner and said the two had a four-month affair.
The subscription list of English tabloids have benefited greatly from the scandal. There was, however, one cancellation. Real Madrid banned them after the story broke.
Last heard, Rebecca was being the nice girl, saying she had no intention of breaking up Beckham's marriage. "I really hope that they get through it", she said. And then added that she thought, "problems were in their marriage long before I came into the picture". She's dismissed the Beckhams' show of solidarity as 'staged'. She's also denied being jealous of Posh Spice. "There's nothing she has that I could possibly want. Not even David". Wow.
