'Make Mumbai like Shanghai'

CM Vilasrao Deshmukh is planning Mumbai's makeover and is urging the Chinese to invest in Maharashtra.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh wants the Chinese government to guide his administration on transforming metropolis Mumbai into a city like Shanghai.

"We are looking ahead for guidance from you on making Mumbai a world class city the way you developed Shanghai," Deshmukh told Hu during the luncheon meeting with the Chinese President at the Taj hotel in South Mumbai.

The State Government has launched an ambitious Mumbai makeover plan modeled on Shanghai.

“It was a fantastic meeting,”Deshmukh later told HT. "The Chinese model of development is definitely interesting for a state like Maharashtra," he said.

Deshmukh also told Hu that Maharashtra was learning from Chinese experiment of developing special economic zones for economic progress. With 71 SEZs planned in the State, Maharashtra tops the Indian states developing SEZs.

Requesting Chinese government to encourage Chinese industries to investment in Maharashtra, Deshmukh assured his government will extend full support for the purpose.

Deshmukh hosted lunch in honour of Hu and the Chinese officials accompanying him.

Talking on the occasion, Hu also mentioned that the contribution by Dr Dwarakanath Kotnis had strengthened the relations between India and China. Dr Kotnis hailed from Solapur in Western Maharashtra.

State Finance Minister Jayant Patil, Chief Secretary DK Sankaran as well as industrialists Dr Vijaypat Singhania and Venugopal Dhoot were present on the ocassion.
