Northern Railway imposes traffic restrictions

THE UTTAR Pradesh Bridge Corporation started renovation work on one of the oldest bridges of Northern Railway, the Malviya Bridge, here on Thursday.

Northern Railway (NR) imposed traffic restrictions on the bridge from today in view of the renovation work. Rail traffic will be blocked on this bridge for two hours daily between 12.35 pm and 2.35 pm.

The UP Bridge Corporation will install a net to cover all the 12 joints on Malviya bridge to ensure that no repair material falls on the railway track situated beneath the bridge during the renovation. The corporation has started the net installation process and fixed angles on the joints.

Assistant engineer of Bridge Corporation Yogendra informed that workwas in progress to install a big net on the Malviya bridge. He said the net would be installed on Friday and repair work would also start with the installation of the net.

Yogendra said movement of pedestrians would also be restricted for the smooth renovation work on the bridge. He further added that the Northern Railway should ensure blocking of trains for more hours on this bridge.

Meanwhile, a team of officials of Northern Railway took stock of the work progress on the Malviya bridge today.

The UP Bridge Corporation had urged the Northern Railway to ensure blocking of rail movement on the bridge for ten hours for the renovation work. But, the Northern Railway agreed on two hours of traffic blocking.

To recall, the movement of heavy and commercial vehicles has been restricted on Malviya Bridge since May 11, 2002 in wake of the poor condition of the bridge.

Earlier known as Doffrin Bridge, this 150-year-old bridge was renovated and renamed as Malviya Bridge in 1947 and was inaugurated by the then Premier of the United Provinces Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant. Since then, no major renovation work has been carried out on the bridge. The bridge is about one kilometre and seventy metres long and nine metres broad.
