As the World Cup fever grips Kerala, Malayalam superstar Mammootty is worried that his latest film Prajapathi to be released amid football's greatest show would lose out to the immense popularity of football icons like Ronaldo and Beckham.

Moreover, Mammootty's rival Mohanlal is playing lead role in Mahasamudram which has got a football-based storyline.

But the film's director, Ranjith, has come up with a novel idea to see that the film does not go unnoticed.

"It is not because Mohanlal is currently playing the role of a football star in 'Mahasamudram' that I decided to ask Mammootty to wear jerseys of countries like Brazil, England, Argentina and Holland. I did it instead to arouse feelings among Mammootty's fans especially in north Kerala where football is a passion," said Ranjith.

Mammootty was engaged on Tuesday in a photo session at Kochi wearing the jerseys of countries.

"Don't you know that for the people in north Kerala, football takes centre stage and since Mammootty has the maximum fans there, we felt that a Mammootty in football jersey could well be the selling point," the director said.

"We will erect flex boards of Mammootty in jerseys of various countries because in north Kerala football fever has reached its peak with flags, cut-outs and posters of stars like Ronaldo, Beckham, Rooney and Ronaldinho," added Ranjith.

He also added that Mammootty in football jerseys would not be used in promos or in the film posters.

Meanwhile the producer of Mahasamudram, Suresh, said that his latest film is one where football is passion for two coastal hamlets and Mohanlal plays the lead role.

For the past two days, Mohanlal has been in the capital city shooting for the film and the venue is the university stadium where the shooting of a football match is taking place.

"The film begins with a football match and ends also with one and the shooting of this and the World Cup is nothing but a mere coin incidence. This film is being released only during Onam holidays in September," said Suresh.
