Yashvant Kamble had assaulted the girl in Sangli, 230 km from Pune, in 2011. He had taken the girl out of her school on the pretext of buying her a dress. But he took her to a field and raped and strangled her. He then escaped to Pune.

After the girl's body was found, her family traced Kamble and caught him. He was handed over to the police after the teachers at the girl's school identified him. Kamble was also given a life sentence for the rape charge.
