“On Thursday around 10.30 p.m Yogesh Sharma, a resident of Mangrouli village, came to us and said he has killed his daughters. We thought he was joking,” said Rishipal Singh, SHO, Jewar police station.

A police team then went to his residence and found the bodies and an axe, the murder weapon.

“Sharma told police his in-laws were demanding money and he was fed up with the daily quarrels with his wife. He planned to kill himself after killing his daughters, but villagers saw him trying to dispose off the bodies. So he surrendered,” said SP S.K. Verma.

“On Friday, his father-in-law Chander Prakash lodged a complaint that Sharma used to torture his wife for dowry. On nonfulfillment of demands he and his family killed his granddaughters. He has been booked under sections 302, 307,498A and the dowry act has been lodged against Sharma and eight others,” Singh added.

Villagers said a fortnight earlier, wife Rinki had complained to the panchayat that Sharma thrashed her. Sharma had promised not to beat his wife then.

“His in-laws claim Sharma had illicit relations with another woman and had planned to kill his wife after killing his daughters. He wanted to marry the woman. Some neighbours said he was upset at not having a male child,” Singh added.
